Bettendorf, Iowa – A train struck a semi-trailer at a rural railroad crossing, prompting an investigation but no reported injuries.

According to the Scott County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred around 2:54 p.m. on March 23 at the intersection of 245th Avenue and Great River Road. Dispatchers received a call reporting a collision between a train and a semi, and deputies responded to the scene.

Investigators said a white 2026 International semi-truck was crossing railroad tracks just south of Great River Road when a train struck the driver’s side rear of the trailer. The 70-year-old male driver, who was the sole occupant of the truck, was not injured. Railroad personnel also reported no injuries.

Authorities allege the driver failed to properly stop at the railroad crossing before proceeding. He was identified as Jonathan Turnage and was issued a citation under Iowa Code 321.341 for failure to stop at a railroad crossing. Officials noted that a citation is not an indication of guilt and the case remains subject to legal review.

The crash temporarily drew emergency response activity to the rural corridor, though no major roadway closures were reported.

The Scott County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Scott Emergency Communication Center, Bettendorf Police Department, and Bettendorf Fire Department.

Incidents involving rail crossings can impact rural commuters and delivery drivers who frequently use these routes.
