Hastings, Nebraska – Extreme heat is set to return to Nebraska by Friday, with triple-digit temperatures likely to persist through the weekend and heat index values exceeding 100 degrees.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a shift in the weather pattern will bring much drier and hotter conditions beginning Thursday. A brief window for showers or an isolated thunderstorm exists early Wednesday, but conditions will rapidly warm with highs returning to the 90s by Thursday and climbing near 106 degrees on Friday and Saturday.

Cities including Grand Island, Kearney, and Holdrege will see afternoon highs from 98 to 106 degrees Friday through Sunday, with overnight lows staying warm in the upper 70s. Outdoor workers and vulnerable populations should take extra precautions, stay hydrated, and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight during peak hours.

This marks the region’s first significant heat wave of June, with temperatures 10–15 degrees above average and little relief expected until early next week.

Heat alerts could be issued if conditions worsen. Stay tuned to local emergency management updates, especially for elderly care and cooling center info.
