Arlington Heights, IL – Arlington Heights schools are back in session this week, and the Arlington Heights Police Department is urging drivers, parents, and students to stay vigilant. With increased traffic expected throughout the village, officials want everyone to prioritize safety on sidewalks and roadways, particularly during school drop-offs and pick-ups.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that 104 people died in school transportation-related crashes in 2022. To prevent further tragedies, police are highlighting essential school bus safety tips.

When a bus displays yellow flashing lights, it is preparing to stop to load or unload children. Drivers should slow down and prepare to stop. Red flashing lights and extended stop arms indicate that the bus has stopped for children to board or exit. Drivers must remain stopped until the lights stop flashing, the stop arm is withdrawn, and the bus starts moving.

Police also advise drivers to be alert, even when bus lights aren’t flashing. Extra caution is necessary during school arrival and dismissal times. Drivers should be especially careful when backing out of driveways or driving through neighborhoods, school zones, or near bus stops.

Arlington Heights Police emphasize the importance of following these guidelines to protect students as they return to school.
