Momence, IL – A live round of ammunition was found on campus at Momence High School on Wednesday, prompting an internal investigation and police involvement.

According to a letter issued by Superintendent Shannon Anderson of Momence Community Unit School District #1, school staff immediately launched an investigation after discovering the ammunition. The Momence Police Department was notified and assisted with identifying the source of the round.

“At no time was the safety of our students, staff, or the public in jeopardy,” the district stated. Officials also emphasized that all district protocols were followed “out of an abundance of caution” to ensure the continued safety and security of everyone on campus.

The district did not release specific information about how the ammunition was brought to school grounds or whether any disciplinary actions will follow. However, the statement noted that the school was able to determine where the round came from.

District leadership thanked the community for its support and urged families to reach out with any concerns. The school day reportedly continued without disruption.

This marks the latest in a series of heightened safety efforts in Illinois schools, where districts are increasingly focused on preparedness and prevention in response to national concerns over campus security.
