Schererville, IN – A phone scam impersonating police officers has prompted a public warning from the Schererville Police Department this week.
According to a statement released Monday on social media, scammers have been using caller ID spoofing to make it appear as though calls are originating from the Schererville Police Department’s main line, 219-322-5000. The scammers reportedly claim that a relative or friend of the recipient is facing arrest and demand immediate bond payment via Western Union.
“This is a scam. Do not send any money,” the department said in the alert, emphasizing that officers will never request funds over the phone or through money transfer services.
The department said the scammers falsely identify supposed warrants and use urgency to manipulate victims into sending money before verifying the situation. The warning urged residents to contact the department directly with questions about arrest or bond status and to avoid acting on suspicious calls.
Anyone who receives such a call is encouraged to report the incident by calling the Schererville Police Department or by visiting in person to speak with an officer.
Authorities are asking the public to remain vigilant and help share the alert with others in the community to prevent further incidents.
