Columbus, Ohio – Scorching heat and scattered thunderstorms are combining to create a dangerous setup for much of Ohio today, with the potential for flash flooding and isolated damaging winds by late afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, high humidity and temperatures near 100°F are expected to intensify by 2 p.m. Sunday, especially in southern and central counties like Scioto, Pike, and Ross. Thunderstorms will develop in the afternoon and could drop heavy rainfall over short periods, leading to localized flooding in low-lying areas and poor drainage zones.

Heat indices are forecast to reach between 94°F and 103°F across cities including Dayton, Chillicothe, and Cincinnati. Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Storms could become severe, with isolated wind gusts strong enough to knock down tree limbs or power lines.

Motorists should avoid flood-prone roads and never attempt to drive through water-covered streets. Children and pets should be kept away from floodwaters, which may contain hidden hazards like sewage or debris.

Thunderstorms may linger into the evening, with additional rounds possible Monday. Heat stress remains a concern, especially without overnight relief. Stay tuned for updates from NWS Wilmington.
