Savannah, Ga. – Minor flooding along the Savannah River near Clyo is expected to linger through Tuesday morning as river levels continue to rise, according to the National Weather Service in Charleston.
At 9:15 p.m. Sunday, gauges measured the river at 12 feet, already above the 11-foot flood stage. Forecasters expect levels to crest at 12.2 feet Tuesday morning. At 13.3 feet, Tom Goethe Road becomes submerged where pavement turns to dirt, cutting off local access.
The Santee River near Jamestown, South Carolina, is also running high. As of 8:30 p.m. Sunday, water levels reached 10.1 feet, just over flood stage. According to the National Weather Service, the river will drop below flood stage late Sunday night, but flooding has already closed logging roads and blocked entry to parts of Wee Tee State Forest.
Officials advise drivers to avoid flooded roads and residents in low-lying areas to monitor rising water. Even shallow flooding can wash out roadbeds or conceal debris.
River flood warnings remain in effect for the Savannah River until further notice, while Santee River conditions should improve by Monday morning.
