Savannah, Ga. – Evening commuters across coastal Georgia are navigating dangerous conditions as a Flash Flood Warning remains in effect until 8 p.m. Thursday. Thunderstorms have already dropped up to two inches of rain in parts of Bryan, Chatham and Liberty counties, with additional downpours expected.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, radar detected heavy rain moving through Savannah and surrounding areas, with flash flooding already reported on major roadways. Low-lying neighborhoods, underpasses and small creeks are at risk of spilling over as rainfall totals climb toward four inches in some spots.
Downtown Savannah, Pooler, Richmond Hill and the busy I-16/I-95 interchange are among the hardest-hit areas. Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport and Hunter Army Airfield are also within the warning zone, raising concerns about travel delays both on the ground and in the air.
Officials urge drivers to avoid flooded streets, stressing that most flood-related deaths happen in vehicles. Residents are encouraged to stay home if possible, monitor local alerts and prepare for potential detours or delays during the evening commute.
The Flash Flood Warning will remain in place until at least 8 p.m., and forecasters say additional advisories could be issued if storms linger into the night.
