Sauk County, WI – The Sauk County Sheriff’s Office has released the identities of those involved in a fatal crash between a pickup truck and an Amish horse-drawn buggy that claimed the life of a 13-year-old girl last week.
According to the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office, the collision occurred at approximately 8:51 a.m. on Wednesday, July 15, on Highway 58 near Rabuck Road in the Town of Ironton.
In an update issued Monday, July 21, the sheriff’s office identified the deceased buggy operator as Kristina Borntrager, 13, of LaValle. Authorities also identified the truck driver as Daniel Kershner.
Investigators said a 2023 Ford F-350 pulling a gooseneck dump trailer was traveling northbound on Highway 58 when it struck the rear of the Amish horse and buggy. The truck was being driven by an 81-year-old man from Viola, Wisconsin, according to the sheriff’s office.
Officials said the buggy sustained significant damage, and Borntrager was pronounced dead at the scene. The sheriff’s office reported that the horse was not injured. Authorities also stated the buggy was equipped with lights and a slow-moving vehicle placard, and the operator was wearing a high-visibility reflective vest.
According to investigators, the truck driver remained at the scene and has been cooperating with the investigation. No criminal charges have been announced.
The Sauk County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remains active. Anyone with information related to the crash is encouraged to contact investigators.
