Sarasota County, FL – An illegal gambling operation in north Sarasota was shut down this week after deputies seized dozens of slot machines and arrested two women, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO), deputies worked alongside the Florida Gaming Control Commission (FGCC) to close Paradise Arcade, located at 6030 N. Lockwood Ridge Road. Authorities say the business was operating illegal gambling devices despite a previously issued cease-and-desist order earlier this year.
During a search of the business, investigators seized 81 slot machines along with an undisclosed amount of cash. Officials confirmed the machines are now secured as evidence while the investigation remains ongoing.
SCSO identified the two individuals arrested as Kelly A. Mallia, born November 27, 1977, and Valerie A. Mallia, born November 14, 1963. Both women were taken into custody Wednesday, December 11. Additional charges or arrests may follow as investigators continue reviewing evidence.
The arcade is located in a busy commercial corridor of north Sarasota, near residential neighborhoods and retail businesses. Sheriff’s officials emphasized that illegal gambling operations often draw additional criminal activity and undermine state-regulated gaming laws.
Authorities also issued a warning to other business owners operating similar establishments.
“If you have done this, it would be a great time to close your business because you could be next,” SCSO said in a public statement.
The Florida Gaming Control Commission continues to assist with the investigation. Officials have not released details on how long the operation may have been active or how much money may have been generated.
Residents with information related to illegal gambling activities in Sarasota County are encouraged to contact local law enforcement.
