Santa Fe, NM – A man was taken into custody Saturday after allegedly threatening a New Mexico State Police officer and attempting to flee following a high-speed hit-and-run along I-25, according to state authorities.

According to New Mexico State Police, the incident began on November 30, 2025, when an officer responded to a be-on-the-lookout alert for a northbound hit-and-run vehicle near mile marker 259. Police say the suspect, identified as John Manus, allegedly fled the earlier crash at a high rate of speed and ultimately crashed again near mile marker 271.

When the trooper approached the scene, officials say Manus was walking toward him with blood on his face and showing signs of a possible mental crisis. According to police, Manus allegedly made erratic statements, backed away, reached into his pocket, and suddenly sprinted toward the officer while holding an object the trooper believed was a knife.

Authorities say Manus then allegedly turned and ran toward a nearby civilian vehicle, attempting to open the door and gain access. The officer caught up to him, but police say Manus began resisting and ignoring commands, prompting a physical struggle.

An off-duty Albuquerque Police Department officer who was passing through the area reportedly saw the altercation, exited his personal vehicle, and assisted the trooper. Together, the officers were able to subdue and detain Manus, who was transported to the Santa Fe County Detention Center.

State Police credited the off-duty APD officer’s quick action during what they described as a rapidly evolving and dangerous situation.
