Santa Barbara, Calif. – Gusty northwest winds are sweeping across the southwestern Santa Barbara County coast tonight, with gusts reaching up to 45 mph expected to continue until about 3 a.m. Tuesday. Areas along El Capitan State Beach, Gaviota, Refugio State Beach, and Jalama Beach remain under a Wind Advisory as conditions create hazards for high-profile vehicles and could down tree limbs.
According to the National Weather Service in Los Angeles, the western range of the Santa Ynez Mountains faces a dual threat — both strong winds and dangerous heat. Daytime highs in the foothills and valleys climbed into the mid-90s to near 105 Monday and are expected to hold through Tuesday evening. Overnight lows in the 70s to low 80s will provide little relief, increasing the risk of heat-related illness, particularly for older adults, children, and those without air conditioning.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor objects, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during peak afternoon heat, and stay hydrated. Travelers on Highway 101 through the Gaviota Pass should prepare for sudden crosswinds.
Heat advisories remain in effect through 9 p.m. Tuesday, with the wind threat easing before sunrise. Additional alerts may be issued if conditions persist.
