Albuquerque, NM – Travel across northern New Mexico’s mountain passes could turn dangerous before sunrise Tuesday as strong winds and heavy snow move into the Sangre de Cristo and Tusas ranges.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from late Monday night through Tuesday evening for the Northern and Southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the Tusas Mountains, including Chama. Snow totals up to 5 inches are possible, but the greater threat may come from wind gusts reaching 60 to 70 mph along exposed ridges and passes.

Blowing snow could drop visibility below a quarter mile at times, especially near high elevations along U.S. 64, U.S. 84 and mountain routes near Taos Ski Valley and Chama. Whiteout conditions may develop quickly during heavier bursts, making travel treacherous through Tuesday afternoon. Strong winds could snap tree limbs and down power lines in isolated areas.

Drivers should increase following distance, secure loose outdoor items and prepare for rapidly changing road conditions. Officials urge residents to monitor updates as watches may be upgraded to warnings before conditions peak Tuesday.
