Springfield, IL – Authorities in Sangamon County are asking the public for help today after two men allegedly broke into a Springfield comic and gaming shop and stole an estimated $20,000 worth of sports cards before sunrise.

According to the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office, the burglary happened at approximately 4:55 a.m. on Wednesday, December 4, 2025, when two male suspects forced entry into 217 Comics and Games, located at 1820 Stevenson Drive in Springfield. Deputies said the individuals allegedly entered the business by breaking through a secured area and quickly removed boxes of high-value collectible sports cards before fleeing the scene.

Images released by the Sheriff’s Office show two men wearing dark clothing and masks while inside the store. Investigators said the suspects were inside the business only briefly, suggesting the operation may have been planned.

The Sheriff’s Office is urging anyone with information that may help identify the suspects to contact its Investigations Division at 217-753-6840. Anonymous tips can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers of Sangamon County at 217-788-8427 or online at cashfortips.us.

Retail theft and targeted break-ins involving collectible cards have increased nationwide in recent years, driven in part by rising secondary-market values for rare sports cards and memorabilia. Local deputies say businesses with high-value merchandise are encouraged to review security footage and update overnight protections as investigations continue.

Residents who live near the Stevenson Drive business or who were in the area around 5 a.m. Wednesday are asked to report anything unusual they may have seen.
