Heavy rainfall across southeastern portions of West-Central Texas is leading to rapid rises along the San Saba River, prompting multiple River Flood Warnings from the National Weather Service in San Angelo. Significant runoff from today’s storms is pushing the river upward quickly at locations near Menard, Brady, and San Saba, where conditions are expected to deteriorate through tonight and Friday.
At Menard, the river was measured at 8.81 feet early this afternoon and is rising steadily. Forecast guidance indicates a crest near 19.9 feet, which would place the river firmly in Minor Flood Stage. Low-water crossings and nearby roadways will likely become flooded and impassable this evening.
Farther downstream at San Saba, the situation is expected to become more serious. The river, currently at 3.03 feet, is forecast to rise sharply overnight, reaching Moderate Flood Stage with a projected crest of 30.2 feet by Friday afternoon. Rapid rises of this magnitude will create hazardous conditions along the river and surrounding low-lying areas.
Residents, travelers, and landowners near the San Saba River should use extreme caution. Never drive through flooded roads—turn around, don’t drown. Continuous monitoring of updated forecasts and warnings is strongly advised.
