San Ramon, CA – A small but noticeable earthquake jolted parts of the East Bay Wednesday morning, briefly rattling homes and prompting hundreds of residents to report light shaking across Contra Costa County and surrounding areas.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the magnitude 3.1 earthquake struck about 5 kilometers southeast of San Ramon at 11:36 a.m. local time. The quake originated at a depth of roughly 8.8 kilometers, a shallow level that can make even weaker earthquakes more noticeable at the surface.

Residents from San Ramon, Danville, Dublin, and parts of San Jose reported quick jolts and light vibrations, with some describing a short rolling sensation lasting only a few seconds. No injuries or damage have been reported, and local fire departments and emergency managers said no calls for assistance were immediately linked to the quake.

The epicenter sits within a seismically active corridor of the East Bay, where small earthquakes are relatively common. While events of this size rarely cause damage, officials remind residents to review basic earthquake safety, including securing heavy furniture and knowing safe spots to drop, cover, and hold on.

Seismologists will continue monitoring for any aftershocks, though none are expected to be significant. Officials note that additional updates would be issued if seismic activity increases overnight.
