San Luis Valley, CO – A sharp drop in temperatures is expected this weekend, as the National Weather Service has issued a Freeze Watch for late Saturday night through Sunday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, temperatures in the San Luis Valley, including communities such as Alamosa, Monte Vista, Del Norte, and San Luis, could fall into the mid to upper 20s. The cold spell is forecast to begin late Saturday night, October 4, and extend into the early hours of Sunday, October 5.

The agency warns that frost and freeze conditions may kill crops, sensitive plants, and potentially damage unprotected outdoor plumbing. Residents are urged to take precautions by covering tender vegetation and ensuring outdoor pipes are insulated.

This Freeze Watch affects the northern, central, and southern San Luis Valley below 8,500 feet, impacting both rural agricultural areas and local towns. The cold snap marks one of the first major freezes of the season in southern Colorado.

The National Weather Service advises that now is the time to prepare, especially for those with late-season gardens or unprotected irrigation systems.
