San Juan, Puerto Rico – Dangerous heat will grip Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands Thursday as a heat advisory remains in effect from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with conditions expected to strain both health and infrastructure.
According to the National Weather Service in San Juan, all coastal and urban areas are under the alert, including San Juan, Ponce, Mayagüez, Vieques, Culebra, St. Thomas, and St. Croix. The combination of hot temperatures and oppressive humidity could push heat index values well into the triple digits, creating hazardous conditions for outdoor workers, the elderly, and those without reliable cooling.
Officials urge residents to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun during peak afternoon hours, and wear light, loose clothing. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments for those working outside. Heat stroke remains a life-threatening emergency — anyone experiencing confusion, fainting, or severe illness should call 911 immediately.
Thursday’s advisory follows a stretch of hot, humid weather that has raised energy demand and prompted reminders to limit non-essential outdoor activity. Additional advisories may be issued if conditions persist through the weekend.
