San Jose, California – Temperatures will plunge into the upper 20s and low 30s across parts of the Bay Area and Central Coast between 1 a.m. and 9 a.m. Saturday, creating hazardous cold conditions along US-101 and I-680 before sunrise.
According to the National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area office, an Extreme Cold Warning and Cold Weather Advisory are in effect for interior valleys and higher terrain, including the North Bay valleys, Interior East Bay, Santa Clara Valley, Salinas Valley and portions of the Central Coast mountains. Overnight lows are expected to fall into the upper 20s to low 30s, with the coldest readings in sheltered inland areas.
In San Jose and surrounding Santa Clara County communities, temperatures could dip to around 28 to 32 degrees, increasing the risk of frost on bridges and overpasses along US-101 and I-280. Farther north in Santa Rosa and Napa, lows in the upper 20s may create icy patches on Highway 101 and Highway 29 during the early morning hours. Concord and inland East Bay areas could also see readings near 30 degrees along I-680.
Officials warn that prolonged exposure to these temperatures can lead to hypothermia for vulnerable populations, including unhoused individuals, the elderly, pets and livestock. Sensitive crops and vegetation may also suffer damage.
Residents are urged to dress in layers, bring pets indoors and check on neighbors before sunrise Saturday. Temperatures will rebound later in the day, but additional cold advisories may be issued if chilly conditions persist into early Sunday.
