San Francisco, CA – A series of Pacific storm systems is expected to impact San Francisco and the greater Bay Area beginning later this week, raising concerns about roadway flooding, holiday travel disruptions, and prolonged wet conditions, according to the National Weather Service.

According to the National Weather Service Bay Area office, confidence is increasing in multiple storm systems affecting the region from Sunday through at least Monday, with rain chances potentially extending into the Christmas holiday period. Forecast rainfall totals remain somewhat uncertain, but early projections show 2 to 5 inches of rain possible across portions of the Bay Area by early next week, with higher amounts in the North Bay hills.

Forecasters say the first system is expected to arrive Tuesday into Wednesday, bringing light to moderate rain. A second, potentially stronger system could follow late Thursday through Saturday, expanding rainfall coverage across the Bay Area and Central Coast.

Weather officials note that prior rainfall may worsen impacts from later storms. Saturated soils could increase the risk of roadway flooding, urban runoff issues, and minor stream flooding, particularly in low-lying and poor drainage areas.

A National Weather Service briefing released Monday highlights uncertainty surrounding the exact placement of moisture plumes and storm tracks. However, officials warn that even small shifts could significantly change local rainfall totals.

Holiday travel may also be affected across Northern California and much of the West Coast. Drivers are urged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and monitor forecasts closely as conditions evolve.

Residents are encouraged to clear storm drains, prepare for slick road conditions, and stay informed through official weather updates as the storm sequence approaches.
