SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – California drivers could face slick conditions by late Monday as the first widespread September rain of fall moves across the Bay Area. Commuters on U.S. 101 and I-280 may encounter slower traffic and pooling water during the evening rush.

According to the National Weather Service, rain chances rise sharply Monday, with showers likely after late morning and a 60% chance of measurable rainfall through the day. Rainfall totals could reach a quarter inch, enough to create slick spots on major highways and reduce visibility for drivers.

Sunday remains mostly cloudy but dry, giving residents a short window for outdoor plans before the wet weather arrives. Winds will remain light, shifting southwest at 7 to 15 mph. By Monday, unsettled air may also bring isolated thunderstorms, further complicating commutes and prompting safety reminders to allow extra travel time.

Tuesday brings another chance for showers, though lower at 30%, followed by lingering rainfall into Wednesday. Cooler, damp air could mark the start of a wet early October, breaking a stretch of warm, dry fall days.

Drivers are advised to slow down on slick roads, keep headlights on during showers, and check wipers before Monday’s commute. Pedestrians should prepare for puddles and gusts near downtown corridors, particularly in the Financial District and Mission neighborhoods.

Rain chances gradually diminish by Thursday, with clearing skies expected by Friday. The break will bring sunnier afternoons into the weekend.
