SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – A bright, breezy start to the weekend will soon give way to a damp, gray Columbus Day as showers push back into the Bay Area early next week. After two days of perfect fall sunshine, a Pacific front is expected to break the dry stretch Monday, making travel along I-80 and Highway 101 slick during the holiday commute.
According to the National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area Office, Saturday and Sunday will stay comfortably mild, with highs in the upper 60s to low 70s and light winds. However, by Monday morning, a developing coastal low will bring increasing clouds and scattered rain showers, especially north and west of San Francisco. The chance of rain is near 50 percent on Columbus Day and rises to 80 percent Monday night.
The system will also bring gusty winds along coastal hills, reducing visibility and creating localized travel delays. Drivers are urged to check road conditions and allow extra travel time for the Monday holiday. Outdoor plans—including pumpkin patch trips or park leaf-viewing—are best scheduled for the sunny weekend window.
According to Caltrans, damp pavement and gusts up to 25 mph could impact bridges and coastal routes through Tuesday morning. Rain tapers midweek, followed by gradual clearing and seasonable temperatures heading into late October.
