California – A calm shoreline can turn violent in seconds. Waves arrive without warning, surging farther up the sand than expected as cold Pacific water pulls back with force. Along the San Francisco Bay Area coast, that risk is increasing today and continues into Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in San Francisco, a Beach Hazards Statement is in effect from this morning through Thursday evening. Breaking waves between 7 and 12 feet are expected along Pacific-facing beaches from Point Reyes National Seashore through San Francisco, Northern Monterey Bay, and south toward Big Sur. Strong rip currents and sudden sneaker waves pose a serious threat, even under sunny skies.

In San Francisco, Ocean Beach and other exposed stretches are especially dangerous. Waves may sweep across rocks, jetties, and low-lying shoreline areas without notice. People standing too close to the water can be knocked down or pulled into the surf. Rescue conditions may deteriorate quickly when sets increase.

Despite pleasant daytime temperatures climbing into the low 60s, the ocean remains cold and unforgiving. To be fair, these hazards often catch people off guard during dry, quiet weather patterns. Stay well back from the water’s edge, avoid rocks and piers, and keep pets leashed far from breaking waves. Never turn your back on the ocean.

Conditions remain hazardous through Thursday evening before gradually easing. Beachgoers should monitor local updates and heed posted warnings. Looking ahead, no rain is expected through Friday, but surf hazards may linger even as skies stay clear.

If you’re heading to the coast, rethink beach walks and photo stops near the water. Have you seen unusually large waves where you live? Share what conditions look like along your stretch of shoreline.
