San Francisco, CA – A strong cold front is expected to sweep across the Bay Area and Central Coast beginning Sunday night, bringing widespread rain, gusty winds, and the potential for thunderstorms into early Monday. The incoming system is forecast to create slowdowns across the region during the Monday morning commute as heavy rain and minor flooding become concerns.

According to the National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area office, rainfall totals will range from 0.5 to 1.5 inches in the lower elevations, with 1 to 1.5 inches expected in the hills. The highest totals—between 2 and 3 inches—are likely in the Santa Lucia Range, where the terrain will enhance precipitation rates. Forecasters note that isolated thunderstorms remain possible Sunday night into Monday morning, adding to the overall hazard potential.

Gusty winds are expected to accompany the front, especially along the coast and higher peaks. Slick roadways, ponding of water, and nuisance flooding are all possible through the early morning hours. The NWS is urging drivers across San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, and surrounding communities to allow extra time for travel Monday and to avoid flooded roadways.

The agency also emphasizes basic safety precautions: never drive through standing water, move indoors during thunder, and seek shelter immediately if lightning is observed. Those traveling along Highway 1, US-101, and I-280 should prepare for reduced visibility and sudden slowing.

Rain chances taper off gradually by midday Monday, though lingering showers may continue in portions of the North Bay and Central Coast.
