San Francisco, California – Rain showers with embedded thunderstorms could create slick roadways and localized ponding along I-80 and US-101 today.
According to the National Weather Service in San Francisco, a 10 percent or higher probability of general thunderstorms exists across the Bay Area and Central Coast Wednesday. Showers may become locally heavy at times, with isolated lightning and gusty winds possible.
Forecasters say impacts may include brief downpours leading to ponding on roadways, reduced visibility, small hail, and erratic wind gusts near stronger cells. Drivers are advised to use headlights, slow down, and avoid cruise control on wet pavement.
Travelers along Interstate 80 through San Francisco and Oakland, U.S. Highway 101 from Santa Rosa to San Jose, Interstate 880 in the East Bay, and State Route 1 near Monterey should prepare for changing conditions during heavier showers.
While widespread severe weather is not expected, isolated thunderstorms could develop quickly and move through during the day.
Officials remind residents: when thunder roars, go indoors. If you see lightning or hear thunder, seek shelter inside a sturdy building or vehicle.
Rainfall may be uneven, with some neighborhoods receiving heavier bursts while others see lighter showers.
Commuters, delivery drivers, and students traveling between cities should allow extra travel time during peak rainfall periods.
