San Francisco, California – Dense fog is creating hazardous driving conditions across parts of the Bay Area, including San Francisco, with sharply reduced visibility expected to persist through Tuesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area/Monterey, a Dense Fog Advisory is in effect for portions of the North Bay and East Bay, with visibility reduced to one-quarter mile or less in some locations. The advisory remains active through 10 a.m. Tuesday, impacting early morning travel.

Forecasters warn that low visibility may develop suddenly, especially along highways, bridges, and coastal routes. Drivers traveling during the morning commute are urged to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and maintain extra distance between vehicles. The use of high beams is discouraged, as it can further reduce visibility in foggy conditions.

The fog has been aided by calm winds and lingering moisture near the surface, allowing dense fog to expand overnight and into the early morning hours. While conditions are expected to gradually improve later in the morning, localized pockets of dense fog may linger longer in low-lying areas.

Commuters heading into San Francisco from surrounding communities should plan for slower travel times, particularly on major corridors connecting the North Bay, East Bay, and Peninsula. Public transit users may also experience delays due to reduced visibility.

No precipitation is associated with the fog, but slick road surfaces may still occur due to condensation. Pedestrians and cyclists are also encouraged to use reflective gear and exercise caution near roadways.

The National Weather Service advises travelers to check real-time road conditions and allow extra time to reach their destinations safely. Additional advisories may be issued if fog coverage expands or persists longer than expected.
