San Francisco, California – Swimmers and boaters are being urged to stay cautious as dangerous ocean currents and fluctuating water levels grip the Pacific Coast through 5 a.m. Thursday, July 31, threatening beachgoers from Sonoma to Big Sur.
According to the National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area office, a Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect as shifting tides and strong currents create unsafe conditions for swimming, canoeing, kayaking, and paddleboarding. All coastal beaches are included in the advisory, which began Wednesday morning.
Areas along Monterey Bay, Santa Cruz, Half Moon Bay, Bodega Bay, and San Francisco’s Ocean Beach are especially at risk, with sudden changes in surf height posing a threat to small vessels and inexperienced swimmers.
Officials recommend avoiding water activities until conditions improve. Those visiting the coast should check with local beach authorities for closure notices or restricted access and are encouraged to keep a safe distance from the shoreline.
Hazards are expected to subside after Thursday morning, but additional alerts may be issued if conditions persist.
