San Francisco, Calif. – Residents across the Bay Area should prepare for scattered thunderstorms this afternoon and evening, with the highest chances in Napa and Sonoma counties. The storms could bring dangerous lightning and localized flooding during the evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Monterey, isolated to scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop across the Bay Area and Central Coast through tonight. Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and keep headlights on during any downpours. Lightning remains a threat with all storms, especially in open areas or near power lines.
The greatest impacts are expected north of San Francisco, where communities in Napa, Sonoma, and parts of Marin could see fast-moving cells capable of producing heavy rain in a short time. Officials stress the importance of seeking shelter at the first sound of thunder, reminding residents: “When thunder roars, go indoors.”
Travelers on Highway 101 and I-80 should be alert for sudden changes in visibility and slick roads. Outdoor events may also be disrupted by fast-developing lightning strikes.
Storm chances linger through the evening before conditions improve overnight. More updates will be issued if stronger storms develop.
