San Francisco, Calif. – Beachgoers along the Bay Area coast could face dangerous sneaker waves Tuesday morning as a strong southwest swell pushes into the region. Waves between 2 and 3 feet may surge unexpectedly, creating a higher risk of knockdowns and rip currents, particularly along south-facing beaches.

According to the National Weather Service in Monterey, the swell is expected to arrive early Tuesday and continue through the morning, elevating the chance of hazardous conditions from Marin down through Monterey County. Officials warn that even experienced swimmers and surfers could be caught off guard by the strength of the waves.

Santa Cruz, Half Moon Bay, and Pacifica are among the locations most at risk, with steep beaches and popular surf zones posing additional danger. Authorities urge visitors to stay off coastal rocks and jetties, keep a safe distance from the surf zone, and never turn their back on the ocean. Pets and children are especially vulnerable to being swept into the water.

The National Weather Service emphasized that even minor swells can generate life-threatening waves along the Central California coast. Hazardous conditions are expected to ease by late Tuesday but could return later this week as additional swells move in.
