San Francisco, Calif. – Strong northwest winds will sweep across the Bay Area Friday afternoon and evening, with gusts reaching up to 40 mph along the coast, mountain passes, and higher elevations. The National Weather Service warns the gusty conditions could make driving hazardous, particularly for high-profile vehicles, and may bring down tree limbs in exposed areas.
According to the NWS, the most impacted zones include the San Bruno Gap, Altamont Pass, and Salinas Valley, where wind funnels through narrow terrain. Drivers on Interstate 580, Highway 101, and coastal routes should remain alert for sudden gusts. Outdoor objects such as trash bins, patio furniture, and construction materials should be secured to prevent them from becoming airborne hazards.
The strong winds will also heighten fire danger in dry grassland and brush areas, increasing the risk of sparks spreading quickly. Residents are urged to avoid activities that could ignite fires.
Winds are expected to gradually ease late Friday night, but elevated risks may persist into Saturday morning before calmer conditions return.
