San Francisco, Calif. – Dangerous beach conditions will continue along south-facing shores of the Bay Area through Tuesday as a strong southwest swell fuels rip currents, sneaker waves, and large tide swings. Officials warn that even experienced swimmers and surfers could be at risk.
According to the National Weather Service in Monterey, the swell is producing long-period waves that can knock people off rocks and jetties or pull swimmers into deep water. Cold ocean temperatures compound the danger, making it harder to swim to safety.
Affected areas include Ocean Beach in San Francisco, Half Moon Bay, Santa Cruz, and Monterey Bay. Lifeguards are urging beachgoers to stay well back from the waterline, never turn their back on the ocean, and closely watch children and pets. Those heading onto boats or paddleboards should wear life jackets.
The hazard is expected to persist into Tuesday night before easing midweek, but forecasters say another swell could arrive later this month. Beach hazard statements remain in effect, and more advisories are possible if conditions worsen.
