San Francisco, California – Hazardous ocean conditions are expected along the Pacific Coast on Sunday as a large westerly swell moves into the region, prompting a Beach Hazards Statement for Bay Area and Central Coast beaches.
According to the National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area/Monterey office, the incoming swell is expected to produce breaking waves up to 20 feet, along with strong currents and an increased risk of dangerous sneaker waves.
Forecasters warned that swimming and surfing conditions will be hazardous, with powerful rip currents capable of pulling people away from shore. Sneaker waves may also surge unexpectedly far up the beach, including over rocks and jetties, posing a serious risk to anyone near the waterline.
The Weather Service advised people to remain out of the water and to avoid turning their backs on the ocean, as conditions can change rapidly even during periods that appear calm.
The Beach Hazards Statement applies to beaches along the Pacific Coast, including locations throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and Monterey Bay region, and is in effect on Sunday.
Residents, visitors, and coastal travelers are urged to use caution, keep a safe distance from the surf zone, and follow guidance from local officials and beach safety personnel.
