San Bernardino, California – Wind gusts up to 60 mph are whipping snow across mountain highways overnight, creating low visibility and hazardous travel before the Friday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in San Diego, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 9 a.m. Friday for the San Bernardino and Riverside County mountains. Periods of light to moderate snow will bring up to 3 additional inches of accumulation in communities including Big Bear Lake, Lake Arrowhead, Running Springs, Wrightwood and Idyllwild-Pine Cove. Strong winds will continue even as snow showers taper.
Blowing snow is reducing visibility along Highway 330, Highway 18 through Crestline and Running Springs, and Highway 243 near Idyllwild. Exposed ridgelines and mountain passes may experience sudden crosswinds capable of downing tree branches and creating scattered power outages. Caltrans could implement chain controls or temporary restrictions if visibility drops further.
Drivers should delay mountain travel if possible and check California 511 for real-time road updates. If travel is unavoidable, carry emergency supplies and prepare for rapidly changing conditions.
Snow showers will diminish toward daybreak, but powerful winds may continue to create drifting and slick spots through midmorning. Additional advisories remain possible if gusts persist.
