AUSTIN, Texas – Critical fire weather conditions will develop across South Central Texas Sunday as powerful north winds and very dry air sweep in behind a strong cold front. The National Weather Service in Austin/San Antonio has issued a Red Flag Warning for all counties in the region, effective 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.
Forecasters expect north winds of 15 to 30 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph, and humidity values dropping to near 15–20%. Temperatures will peak near 73°F, but the combination of dry fuels, strong winds, and low humidity will create critical fire danger across the Hill Country, Rio Grande Plains, and I-35 corridor, including Austin, San Antonio, Kerrville, Uvalde, and Del Rio.
Officials urge residents to avoid all outdoor burning or spark-producing activities, as any fire could spread rapidly and become uncontrollable. Drivers are asked to use caution along rural highways, where blowing dust and grass fires could briefly limit visibility. Local emergency managers remind landowners to secure farm equipment, avoid welding, and ensure water sources are available for quick response.
The fire danger will persist into Monday, though winds are expected to ease slightly by late day. Conditions should gradually improve midweek as moisture returns from the Gulf.
