San Antonio, Texas – Strong northwest winds and extremely low humidity could turn routine burns into fast-moving wildfires across South Central Texas on Sunday, prompting a Fire Weather Watch from the National Weather Service in Austin/San Antonio.
According to the agency, winds are expected to reach 15 to 25 mph with gusts as high as 40 mph beginning early Sunday morning and lasting through Sunday evening. Humidity levels may fall to 15 percent or lower across the Edwards Plateau, Hill Country, and Rio Grande Plains. When combined with dry fuels, these conditions could quickly ignite and spread flames.
Counties under the watch include Bexar, Bandera, Llano, Kerr, Travis, Medina, and surrounding areas. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and to secure loose items that could be blown by strong gusts. Fire crews are preparing for heightened risk across open grasslands and rural roads where visibility may drop due to dust.
Temperatures will range from the mid-60s to mid-70s Sunday, adding little relief from the dry, windy pattern. Officials warn that additional advisories or Red Flag Warnings could be issued if conditions worsen by afternoon.
Warnings remain in effect through Sunday evening.
