San Antonio, TX – Extreme heat is set to grip the region Tuesday, with temperatures reaching 99°F and heat index values climbing to 103°F by mid-afternoon. Light winds will offer little relief, and the risk for heat-related illness will be at its highest so far this week.

According to the National Weather Service, calm conditions in the morning will give way to an east wind around 5 mph in the afternoon, locking in the oppressive feel. The heat will be especially intense in urban areas like downtown San Antonio, along I-35, and in less-shaded neighborhoods. Outdoor workers, children, and the elderly are most at risk, and residents are urged to stay indoors during peak heating hours, drink plenty of water, and avoid strenuous activity after late morning.

The swelter is expected to persist into Wednesday, when a slight chance of afternoon thunderstorms may bring brief relief, but highs will still near 99°F. Cooler conditions are unlikely before late week.

Warnings remain in effect through Tuesday night, with additional heat advisories possible later in the week.
