Austin, Texas – Residents across Central Texas are enjoying a brief taste of springlike warmth today, but a sharp change is on the way as a cold front moves through the region tonight, according to the National Weather Service Austin–San Antonio.
High temperatures today are expected to reach the upper 60s to low 70s across much of the area, including communities along the Interstate 35 corridor from Austin to San Antonio. Skies will remain mostly to partly sunny, with light west to northwest winds around 5 to 15 mph, occasionally gusting higher.
Conditions will change quickly overnight as the cold front pushes south. By Saturday, temperatures will be noticeably cooler, with highs falling back into the 40s and 50s across Central Texas. The most significant cold arrives by Sunday morning, when lows are forecast to dip into the upper 20s, and even the upper teens in some outlying and Hill Country locations.
Travelers and early-morning commuters along I-35, as well as surrounding highways, should be prepared for the colder start to the day Sunday, especially those heading out before sunrise. While no winter precipitation is expected, the cold may catch some off guard after today’s warmth.
Forecasters note that this cold spell will be short-lived. Temperatures are expected to gradually rebound early next week, returning closer to seasonal norms by Monday and Tuesday. Along with the moderation, rain chances are expected to return by midweek, signaling a shift back to a more typical winter pattern for late January.
Officials recommend enjoying today’s warm conditions but taking time to prepare for the colder weekend ahead. Residents should ensure pets, plants, and exposed pipes are protected, especially Sunday morning when temperatures are expected to be at their coldest.
As always, forecast details may evolve slightly with the timing of the front. Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from weather.gov/ewx and local alerts as the weekend approaches.
