ABILENE, Texas – Drivers across west-central Texas should be prepared for sudden heavy downpours Wednesday as scattered thunderstorms develop through the afternoon and evening. Brief but intense rainfall may lead to street flooding, especially in low-lying areas.
According to the National Weather Service in San Angelo, storms will be hit or miss, with some areas staying dry while others experience as much as 1 to 2 inches of rain in less than an hour. Forecasters warn that slow-moving storms could cause temporary flooding on major roadways, including stretches of U.S. Highway 277 and Interstate 20 near Abilene.
San Angelo, Abilene, and surrounding towns including Sweetwater, Brady, and Junction are most likely to see scattered activity. The heaviest rainfall is expected during the late afternoon commute, which could delay travel and impact outdoor events. Residents are urged never to drive through flooded roadways, as even shallow water can be dangerous.
Storm chances will linger into the evening before gradually tapering off overnight. Additional rounds of showers and storms are possible later this week as unstable conditions remain in place.
