San Angelo, Texas – Wind gusts over 40 mph near U.S. Highway 87 are contributing to elevated to critical fire weather conditions across west Texas Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Abilene/San Angelo, southwest winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts exceeding 40 mph will combine with relative humidity values as low as 15% Tuesday. These conditions increase the likelihood that fires could ignite and spread rapidly.
The most critical conditions are expected across parts of west-central Texas, including areas near San Angelo, Abilene, Sweetwater, Brownwood, and along major corridors such as Interstate 20, U.S. 277, and U.S. 67.
On Wednesday, west to northwest winds of 10 to 20 mph will persist, with humidity levels dropping as low as 10% in elevated risk areas. Fire weather concerns are expected to continue through midweek.
Officials warn that dry vegetation and gusty winds significantly raise the risk of grass fires, particularly along open highways and rural roadways.
Residents are advised to avoid outdoor burning and activities that could generate sparks. Drivers should ensure trailer chains are secured and avoid parking vehicles on dry grass.
Commuters, oil field crews, and agricultural workers traveling along I-20 and U.S. 87 may notice blowing dust and rapidly changing fire conditions.
While no widespread wildfires were reported as of Tuesday morning, the combination of wind and low humidity creates favorable conditions for fast-moving fires.
Fire officials urge residents to remain alert and monitor local burn bans.
