Abilene, Texas – Drivers in West Central Texas should prepare for the possibility of flash flooding starting Friday afternoon as slow-moving thunderstorms bring bursts of heavy rainfall through Saturday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in San Angelo, a Marginal Risk of excessive rainfall is in effect for much of the region. Scattered to isolated thunderstorms are forecast to develop Friday afternoon and continue overnight. Intense rainfall over short periods could overwhelm storm drains and lead to flooding of low-lying roads, creeks, rivers, and city streets.
Areas under the advisory include Abilene, San Angelo, Ballinger, and Sweetwater. Travel may become hazardous during peak rainfall, especially on rural roads and flood-prone urban intersections. Flash flooding is most likely in areas with poor drainage or recent rainfall. The Weather Prediction Center warns that even a short burst of intense rain can create dangerous driving conditions.
Residents are urged to avoid driving through flooded roadways and to have emergency plans in place. Charge devices, monitor local alerts, and remain weather-aware through early Saturday.
Rain chances taper by midday Saturday, but additional alerts may be issued if storm systems stall or intensify.
