Salt Lake City, Utah – Lake-effect snow continues to impact northern Utah overnight, with a Winter Weather Advisory in effect through 2 a.m. MST Friday, Jan. 9, for the Salt Lake, Tooele, Rush, and Utah valleys.
According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, additional snowfall of 1 to 3 inches is expected overnight, primarily affecting eastern Tooele County and western Salt Lake County, including areas near the Oquirrh Mountains. Similar snowfall amounts are forecast for Utah Valley, especially northwest Utah County, including Cedar Valley, Eagle Mountain, and SR-73.
The advisories cover the Salt Lake Valley, Tooele and Rush Valleys, and Utah Valley, impacting communities such as Salt Lake City, West Jordan, Sandy, Tooele, Grantsville, Provo, Payson, and Lehi.
Forecasters say a persistent band of lake-effect snow developing off the Great Salt Lake is responsible for the ongoing snowfall. While accumulations are modest, officials warn that snowfall rates may briefly intensify under heavier bands, leading to rapidly changing road conditions.
Winter driving conditions are expected overnight and into the early morning hours of Friday, Jan. 9, particularly on untreated roads and near mountain-adjacent valleys. Even light snowfall may create slick and hazardous conditions for early-morning commuters.
Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra travel time. For the latest road conditions, travelers should check UDOT Traffic at udottraffic.utah.gov or call 511 before heading out.
