Salt Lake City, UT – The Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is renewing public appeals for information in the 1971 double homicide of Carolyn Kingston and Michael Bown, releasing new evidence and a composite sketch in hopes of identifying the suspect.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the crime occurred on September 2, 1971, at Natter’s Market just before 2 p.m. Investigators say Kingston had just begun her shift when an armed suspect entered the store in what appeared to be a robbery attempt.

During the incident, delivery driver Michael Bown reportedly arrived with bread and inadvertently interrupted the robbery. He was fatally shot at the scene. The suspect then allegedly forced Kingston into a back storage room and shot her in front of her 4-year-old son.

Detectives recently released a composite sketch of the suspect and an image of a watch believed to have belonged to the individual. Photos from the original scene and a vehicle description have also been made public, with investigators hoping someone recognizes key details that could finally close the case.

Anyone with information about the crime is urged to contact Detective Pender at (385) 468-9816 or submit an anonymous tip via bit.ly/3WH74Vd.
