Salt Lake City, Utah – Monsoon moisture will ramp up across Utah and southwest Wyoming beginning Thursday, with a more intense surge expected Friday into the weekend—setting the stage for thunderstorms, gusty winds, and localized flash flooding.

According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, the first wave of moisture will spread across southern Utah Wednesday into Thursday, triggering isolated high-based storms with strong winds. By Friday, a deeper surge of monsoon air will overspread the region, boosting the risk of heavier rainfall through Sunday.

The primary threat early on will be gusty outflow winds, but as storm bases lower heading into the weekend, downpours may become more intense. This shift raises concerns for flash flooding, especially in burn scars, slot canyons, and low-lying areas. Cities including St. George, Moab, Provo, and Evanston, Wyoming, could all see increased storm coverage.

Residents with weekend hiking or camping plans in Utah’s national parks or canyons should stay weather-aware and have backup shelter options. Flash Flood Watches may be issued as storm chances rise.

Rain chances will continue into early next week. Further updates from the NWS are expected as storm timing and impacts become clearer.
