Salt Lake City, Utah – Thunderstorms packing winds over 60 mph could disrupt travel and power Tuesday afternoon across northern Utah, with the strongest impacts likely from Ogden to the Wyoming border. Drivers, residents, and outdoor workers should brace for dangerous gusts, frequent lightning, and an elevated risk of wildfire as storms roll through until evening.
According to the National Weather Service Salt Lake City, a marginal severe weather risk will develop Tuesday afternoon for northern Utah and southwest Wyoming. Isolated to scattered showers and storms may down trees, knock out power, and rapidly spread fires, especially in Weber, Davis, and Box Elder counties. The main hazard will be sudden damaging wind gusts, while frequent lightning could spark new wildfires in already dry grasslands and foothills.
Interstates 15, 80, and 84 could see hazardous crosswinds and low visibility, especially near Ogden, Logan, and Evanston. Residents should secure loose outdoor items, avoid outdoor burning, and keep cell phones charged in case of outages. Outdoor activities and travel are best postponed until storms move out Tuesday evening. Similar patterns have triggered scattered power outages and small fires in the region as recently as June 2022.
This severe weather threat is expected to persist until late Tuesday night, with additional watches or warnings possible if storms intensify.
