Salt Lake City, Utah – Gardeners and growers across northern Utah face a critical window to protect plants as temperatures drop to 32°F or lower by early Friday morning, with another freeze expected before sunrise Saturday that could damage or kill crops.
According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, a strong cold front moving through Thursday will push overnight temperatures below freezing across the Wasatch Front, including Salt Lake, Davis, and Weber counties, along with eastern Box Elder County, Tooele and Rush Valley, and areas near the San Rafael Swell. The freeze threat begins late Thursday night and continues through early Saturday morning.
In Salt Lake City and surrounding suburbs, temperatures are expected to fall into the upper 20s to near 30°F during the pre-dawn hours, creating frost conditions capable of damaging early-season vegetation. Rural valleys, including Tooele and Box Elder counties, could see even colder pockets where freezing conditions last longer after sunrise.
Residents are urged to cover sensitive plants, bring potted vegetation indoors, and shut off or drain irrigation systems to prevent damage. Farmers across northern Utah should take immediate action to avoid crop loss, especially in low-lying areas where cold air settles.
The freeze warning remains in effect through Saturday morning, and additional advisories could follow if cold air lingers into early next week.
