Salt Lake City, Utah – Southern Utah faces a growing wildfire threat Monday as gusty winds and dangerously dry conditions combine to create critical fire weather, especially in the afternoon and evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, southwest winds reaching up to 35 mph and humidity levels falling below 5% will lead to hazardous fire conditions across southern and southeastern Utah. A Red Flag Warning has been issued from Monday afternoon through the evening for counties including Washington, Kane, and San Juan.
Residents in cities like St. George, Moab, and Kanab are urged to avoid any outdoor burning, fireworks, or activities that could create sparks. Even routine tasks like using power tools or parking on dry grass can trigger fast-spreading wildfires under these conditions.
The NWS also warns that poor overnight humidity recovery will exacerbate fire risks, meaning fuels like brush and grasses remain highly flammable well into the evening hours. Fire crews remain on alert as early-season heat combines with volatile winds—conditions similar to June 2021 when several wildfires erupted across the region.
The Red Flag Warning remains in effect through Monday evening. More advisories may be issued if conditions persist into Tuesday.
