Salt Lake City, Utah – Dangerous fire weather conditions will grip much of Utah midweek as strong winds and dry thunderstorms increase wildfire ignition risk. The National Weather Service warns that northeast Utah will see a Red Flag Warning on Wednesday, followed by a Fire Weather Watch Thursday, as lightning and gusty outflow winds threaten to spread flames quickly.

According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, westerly winds up to 30 mph and humidity levels near 10-15% will create critical fire conditions Wednesday afternoon. On Thursday, scattered dry thunderstorms with gusts up to 50 mph are expected over Utah’s higher terrain, pushing into adjacent valleys by evening.

The risk is highest for northeast Utah, including areas near Duchesne, Vernal, and Flaming Gorge. Residents are urged to avoid campfires, outdoor welding, or any activities that could spark flames. Fire crews may face rapid spread conditions if ignitions occur, especially in grassy and brush-filled areas.

Critical fire weather conditions could persist until Thursday night, with additional advisories possible if winds remain strong.
