Utah – Darkening clouds are building over Salt Lake City this afternoon, and the first showers are already beginning to spot pavement across I-15 and I-80. The air feels cooler and unstable, and conditions are about to shift quickly. Thunderstorms could develop within hours, bringing bursts of rain and gusty winds that slow travel fast.

According to the National Weather Service, storm chances rise to 70% through the afternoon, with showers and thunderstorms likely after 3 p.m. Winds from the south to southwest range from 10 to 18 mph, with gusts up to 33 mph. Rainfall totals between a tenth and quarter inch are expected, with higher amounts in thunderstorms.

Across Salt Lake City and nearby areas like West Valley City and Sandy, showers increase through late afternoon and evening. Roads will turn slick quickly during heavier bursts, especially on busy corridors like I-215. Plan extra time and avoid sudden stops as visibility drops in rain.

By Tuesday, scattered showers remain possible, though coverage becomes more limited. A clearer break arrives Wednesday with mostly sunny skies and highs near the upper 60s.

Looking ahead, another system approaches late week. By Thursday, rain may mix with snow as temperatures drop, especially during early morning or late evening hours. No major accumulation is expected, but changing conditions could impact travel.

Tuesday: Chance of showers, high near 57°F
Wednesday: Mostly sunny, high near 67°F
