Salt Lake City, Utah – Heavy mountain snow will redevelop after midnight and intensify before sunrise Wednesday, with up to 2 feet possible in the Wasatch, creating dangerous travel along I-80 through Parleys Canyon during the morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, snow will become heavy at times overnight across Utah’s mountains, especially after midnight into Wednesday morning. Northern mountains, including the Cottonwood Canyons, could see 1 to 2 feet of accumulation, with locally higher totals. Central mountains are forecast to receive 8 to 18 inches, while the Wasatch Back, including areas near Park City, may see 6 to 12 inches with isolated totals near 20 inches.

Interstate 80 at Parleys Summit, US-189 through Provo Canyon and US-89 near Logan are likely to experience snow-covered roads and reduced visibility by early Wednesday. Blowing snow and bursts of heavier snowfall could briefly drop visibility below a quarter mile on exposed ridgelines.

Snow will transition to a more showery pattern Wednesday afternoon before gradually diminishing Wednesday night. However, traction restrictions are likely on major mountain routes during peak travel times.

Drivers should prepare for winter conditions, carry emergency supplies and check UDOT road updates before departing. Avalanche danger may also increase with rapid accumulations in higher terrain.

Winter weather impacts will remain possible through Wednesday evening, and additional advisories may be issued if snowfall rates exceed expectations.
