Salmon, Idaho – A strong early-season winter storm is expected to hit the Lemhi Range this weekend, bringing several inches of snow to mountain passes and creating hazardous travel conditions through late Sunday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Missoula, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Saturday evening through late Sunday night for elevations above 5,500 feet in Western and Eastern Lemhi Counties. Forecasters warn that 1 to 6 inches of snow could accumulate, with higher totals likely near Lost Trail Pass, Lemhi Pass, and Bannock Pass.
The storm could cause moderate to isolated major winter impacts, with slick and snow-covered roads, especially along Highway 93 from Gibbonsville to Lost Trail Pass and Highway 28 near Tendoy and Lone Pine. Melting snow followed by colder temperatures may lead to refreezing and black ice, particularly overnight.
According to the Idaho Transportation Department, travelers should be prepared for chain restrictions, potential pass delays, and reduced visibility during heavier snow bursts. Those driving between Salmon and the Montana border are advised to keep emergency gear, check road cameras, and delay nonessential mountain travel.
Temperatures will fall sharply Sunday, signaling a lasting turn toward colder fall conditions across eastern Idaho. Hunters, campers, and outdoor crews should prepare for below-freezing nights and rapidly changing mountain weather.
